Why It Matters

A safe Learning Environment

Learning is a powerful tool for transformation, significantly impacting economic empowerment, health, and well-being. Globally, each additional year of schooling increases earnings by 10% and reduces poverty risk by 9%. Women reinvest 90% of their income into families, improving health and education.

In Uganda, barriers like limited access to education and gender inequality hinder socio-economic development. Only 32% of Ugandan women have completed secondary education (UBOS). EFIUG's Peer Education Drive and AskMe Project address these gaps, with financial literacy training benefiting over 1,000 women and supporting teenage mothers to improve maternal and child health.

Learning profoundly impacts health. The WHO reports that educated women are more likely to seek prenatal care. In Uganda, maternal mortality rates are high, with 336 deaths per 100,000 live births (UNICEF). EFIUG's Community Health Education Campaign, reaching over 1,000 women, promotes preventive health practices. Initiatives like 16 Days of Activism raise awareness about gender-based violence, fostering informed, proactive communities.

Additional Barriers

Cultural Norms
Cultural practices often prioritize boys' education over girls', reducing educational opportunities for Ugandan women.

Early Marriage
High rates of early marriage disrupt girls' education, with 40% of girls married before 18 (UNICEF).

Inadequate Funding
Insufficient government funding for education limits the quality and availability of learning resources in Uganda.

Teacher Shortages
A shortage of qualified teachers affects the quality of education, particularly in rural areas.

Health Challenges
Frequent health issues, including malaria and malnutrition, impact school attendance and learning outcomes for girls.
