Introduction

Community justice and empowerment play crucial roles in combating GBV, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This article discusses how EFIUG’s work in community justice is leading to a reduction in GBV and draws lessons from other successful initiatives.

EFIUG’s Strategy for Community Justice

EFIUG has focused on enhancing community justice systems as a means of combating GBV by:

  1. Training Community Paralegals: EFIUG trains community members as paralegals to provide legal assistance and raise awareness about GBV.
  2. Strengthening Local Councils: By supporting local councils and ensuring they are well-informed about GBV laws, EFIUG helps create a legal environment that is responsive to the needs of survivors.
  3. Promoting Gender-Sensitive Justice: EFIUG advocates for gender-sensitive approaches in handling GBV cases, ensuring that survivors receive fair and just treatment.

Lessons from Uganda

  1. Building Trust in Community Systems: Successful interventions, such as those by Uganda’s Law and Advocacy for Women in Uganda (LAW-Uganda), show that building trust in community justice systems is vital. EFIUG’s work to make justice accessible and fair is helping to build this trust.
  2. Empowering Survivors: Empowering GBV survivors to seek justice has been a key lesson. EFIUG’s support networks and legal assistance empower survivors to take action and seek justice.

Global Lessons

  1. Community-Based Legal Clinics: Community-based legal clinics, like those in South Africa, have been effective in providing legal support to GBV survivors. EFIUG’s community paralegals model is aligned with this approach.
  2. Collaboration with Law Enforcement: Collaborative efforts between community justice systems and law enforcement agencies are essential. Lessons from India’s community policing models can provide additional insights for EFIUG.

Conclusion

EFIUG’s work in community justice is contributing to the reduction of GBV in Uganda. By integrating global best practices and local experiences, EFIUG is creating a robust framework for community justice that empowers survivors and ensures accountability.
