Economic empowerment

Women with higher education levels tend to have better job prospects and higher earnings. However, there is still a gender gap in educational attainment and professional employment

Why It Matters

The Backborne of the World Economy!

Women's economic empowerment is vital for global development. Research shows that gender equality in the workforce could boost global GDP by $28 trillion by 2025. Economically empowered women contribute to improved education, health, and overall community well-being.

In Uganda, empowering women economically is crucial for poverty reduction and sustainable development. With 38% of Ugandan households being female-headed, economically empowered women can directly improve children's nutrition, education, and health. Additionally, women make up 53% of the labor force but often work in low-income sectors.

Globally, women's economic participation is linked to positive outcomes. For example, in developing countries, women reinvest 90% of their income in their families and communities, compared to 30-40% for men. This reinvestment promotes sustainable economic growth and social progress.

Solutions

We (EFIUG) have implemented comprehensive training programs to enhance women's skills in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and business management. By equipping over 1,000 women with these essential skills, EFIUG has enabled them to effectively manage their finances, start businesses, and achieve economic independence.

EFIUG has also established microfinance groups to provide women with access to capital. These groups have provided loans to over 500 women, allowing them to start or expand their businesses. This access to microfinance has been crucial in helping women overcome financial barriers and invest in income-generating activities.

To further support economic empowerment, EFIUG has facilitated the formation of cooperatives and provided market access support. By forming cooperatives, women can collectively improve product quality and negotiate better market terms. EFIUG's efforts have resulted in partnerships with major retailers and export firms, significantly increasing sales revenue for women's cooperatives and fostering economic growth in their communities.
