Meet Shamim NaKayi

Shamim, a 32-year-old single mother of two from Kawanda, Uganda, had always dreamt of starting her own business. However, she faced numerous challenges, including limited access to capital and a lack of business knowledge. Shamim’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of community support.

The Journey Begins

In early 2023, Shamim heard about EFIUG’s business training program through a friend. Intrigued by the opportunity, she decided to attend an information session. There, she learned about the various resources EFIUG offers, including business training, mentorship, and access to startup capital.

“I felt a spark of hope,” Shamim recalls. “EFIUG was offering exactly what I needed to turn my dreams into reality and there were many women with whom we shared similar dreams with.”

Building Skills and Confidence

Shamim enrolled in the business training program with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The comprehensive course covered essential topics such as business planning, financial management, marketing strategies, and customer service.

“I was nervous at first, but the EFIUG trainers were incredibly supportive and knowledgeable,” Shamim says. “They made complex concepts easy to understand and always encouraged us to ask questions.”

Throughout the training, Shamim’s confidence grew. She developed a solid business plan for a small bakery specializing in traditional Ugandan pastries (samosas, cakes and others). With her newfound knowledge and the support of her mentors, Shamim felt ready to take the next step.

Turning Dreams into Reality

Upon completing the training, Shamim applied for EFIUG’s startup capital grant. Her well-prepared business plan impressed the selection committee, and she was awarded the grant to help launch her bakery.

“I was overjoyed when I received the news,” Shamim recalls. “It felt like a dream come true when Sophia called me.”

With the startup capital, Shamim purchased essential baking equipment and rented a small shop in her neighborhood. She also hired two assistants, creating employment opportunities within her Kawanda community.

A Flourishing Business

Since opening her bakery, Shamim has experienced tremendous success. Her delicious pastries quickly gained popularity, and her customer base grew steadily. She even started offering baking classes to local women, sharing her knowledge and empowering others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

“EFIUG’s support has been life-changing,” Shamim says. “Not only have I achieved financial independence, but I’ve also gained the confidence to inspire and support other women in my community.”

Looking Ahead

Shamim’s story is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, support, and the right resources. She continues to participate in EFIUG’s mentorship program, now as a mentor, helping other aspiring entrepreneurs navigate their own journeys.

“My journey with EFIUG has come full circle,” Shamim reflects. “I’m proud to be part of a community that empowers women and girls to achieve their dreams. I look at the BBW women and I know, EFIUG is doing something right”
