At the Annual General Meeting held at Pope Paul Hotel and online on June 8th, 2020, Dr. Busonga, the esteemed Chairperson of the Eliezah Foundation Initiative (EFI) Board of Directors, announced his decision to step down after three consecutive terms. The announcement, which took place during his final remarks, left attendees—comprising the entire executive team, their managers, board members, and community representatives—stunned.

“Moving forward, I would like to announce today the end of my service as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of this organization,” Dr. Busonga declared. He went on to appoint Eng. Rehemah Nyanzi as his successor.

EFI Secretary General Janet Nansamba, visibly taken aback, admitted that she was unaware of Dr. Busonga’s planned resignation. “I am shocked, I don’t even know what to tell you. I didn’t know, I didn’t know,” she confessed. Nansamba explained that Dr. Busonga is known for writing his own speeches, making it difficult for anyone to predict his announcements.

Dr. Busonga’s leadership has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Eliezah Foundation Initiative. Founded by him as a teenager in August 2005 and officially registered as a community organization in 2009, EFI has thrived under his guidance. He has successfully secured funding from both federal and private institutions, including a recent partnership with ViiV Healthcare. His dedication to supporting women’s enterprises, providing financial aid for legal assistance to women, and ensuring the availability of HIV services has made a significant impact on the community.

Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Busonga stated, “Leading this organization has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, and I have full confidence that Eng. Rehemah Nyanzi will continue to steer EFI towards even greater success.”

This is not the first time Dr. Busonga has attempted to step down. In 2017, he appointed Dr. Barbara Bynes as his successor, but she declined the offer due to her relocation to the United States. His commitment to the organization kept him in the role until now.

As the EFI community comes to terms with this significant change, the legacy of Dr. Busonga’s leadership remains a testament to his vision and dedication. Eng. Rehemah Nyanzi, the newly appointed Chairperson, faces the challenge of continuing the momentum and furthering the mission of the Eliezah Foundation Initiative.

Dr. Busonga’s departure marks the end of an era, but his contributions will be remembered and celebrated. His strategic vision and unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission have set a solid foundation for future growth and success.

“He will be missed,” echoed many attendees, reflecting the sentiment of the entire EFI community.
